Ever wonder what Angel Olsen’s go-to Karaoke song is? Last night she confirmed at a live viewing party of her album “Big Time” movie premiere that it is Dolly Parton’s “You're Going To Be Sorry.” She also said that the Karaoke DJ would often turn her songs down to mess her up.
Today, in 1956 Rock and Roll was banned in Santa Cruz, when about 200 teenagers danced to the music of Chuck Higgins and his orchestra. When the police showed up at the event to check on it, Lieutenant Richard Overton reported that the crowd was engaged in “suggestive, stimulating and tantalizing motions induced by the provocative rhythms of an all-negro band.” It was on this day that the city authority announced a total ban on rock and roll at public gatherings stating that it was “detrimental to both the health and morals of our youth and community.” Two weeks later similar bans were created in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and San Antonio, Texas.
Highlight Reel
Here is a hodgepodge of my week at a glance.
I am back from Iowa and have been delightfully celebrating my birthday over the course of the past 7 days. Here is a life hack: if you have scheduling conflicts with seemingly EVERY friend you have the week of your birthday, spread it out over each day and get free drinks/food/events every day of the week without getting too drunk/full/overstimulated like you would on just one day.
On Monday, I had the opportunity to interview Dama Scout, a band that is new to me but has already made a huge impact on my brain. Because I want it to be perfect, I’m taking a bit more time to write and organize my thoughts than most of my haphazard opinion pieces. Look forward to that coming soon.
ON REPEAT THIS WEEK:
If you like this, check out my Type-A Coming of Age playlist. It’s meant to have the vibes of a femme that is stressed, neurotic, and angry. This is their first “I’ve had enough” type of breakdown (or maybe break through?) Totally not autobiographical at all, so don’t even think that.
Tell me the earworms you have had this week! I always need new music. Too much is never enough.
Albums released last week that I enjoyed:
